Sharing Experiences Using Magnetic Drills

With the increasing application of magnetic drill bits in industries, mechanics, the need to improve machining techniques is increasing. Even if you have equipped the best magnetic drill, the standard magnetic drill bit, when operated incorrectly, still causes the magnetic drill bit to burn, break, affecting the machine's life.

The following article is made from consulting the experience of many maintenance experts of famous European drilling machine manufacturers. Hope to help readers draw experience for their drilling process.

Experience using effective magnetic drills

1. Do not perform cooling, or improperly cool the magnetic drill bit while in use.

Cooling is essential to increase drill bit life and increase drilling efficiency. Many magnetic drills are equipped with a gravity cooling water system, while others have shafts with an internal cooling system. Coolant for magnetic drill bit should be lubricating with low viscosity.

If your magnetic drill is not equipped with a cooling system, you don't just spray coolant on the drill bit because it will just revolve around the drill during drilling instead of flowing into the blade part where it is needed. In this case, a lubricating rod placed on the blade will be suitable. The lubricating rod is a waxy substance that adheres to the blade teeth and remains active until a hole is completed. It should always be used when drilling in horizontal and overhead positions.

For deep holes, a pressurized cooling system will do the best and help prolong the life of the drill bit.

2. Magnetic drill bit is not fastened to the drill

Use two sets of screws to secure the drill bit securely to the drill. This is very important, ensuring stability, no vibrations that can break the drill bit or produce a low-quality drill hole.

3. Do not use centering tips or curved centering tips

Use the centering tip because it helps to align the drill bit to the center of the hole. More importantly, it only guides the coolant to flow into the teeth of the drill and helps push the steel core out of the drill.

4. Using the magnetic drill bit for the wrong application.

Magnetic drill bits are specified for specific drilling materials. Although many manufacturers have provided data for each tip used for specific materials. But in the process of arbitrary use, do not care about these data. Leads to fire or breakage of drill bit.

For example:  Alloy drill bits are used to drill high hardness materials. But it must be run at 2-3 times faster than normal drill bit.

5. Incorrect handling when drilling multiple overlapping steel plates.

When drilling multiple stacked steel plates or structural steel with two layers of steel. Requires stopping drilling after each plate is drilled to remove the steel core. Drilling multiple sheets of steel with the same hole using a "stack-cut" drill is much faster than drilling multiple plates at a time.

6. Drilling speed is too slow.

A major cause of breakage or blunting of magnetic drill bits is the slow down rate of the drill bit. Use the right drill bit, drill with a firm, steady pressure throughout the cutting process, provide cooling water, can hear the engine running without being overworked. Will give a good drilling result and long drill life. A good feed rate also helps push the chip out of the cutting path, keeping the cutting edge free from chip jams.

When cutting at too low a feed rate, the chips will thin, break and get stuck in the chip exit of the cutting edge. This makes cutting slower even if cutting is stopped. It is easy to damage the drill bit.

7. Magnetic drill bit too blunt.

A blunt drill bit also has a tendency to lift the drill's magnetic base, which can lead to drill breakage. Stop drilling to sharpen or change the drill bit. Punching the drill bit to get the chips instead of pushing them out of the chip outlet causes similar problems.

8. Pile pressure is too strong during drilling.

Some people try to drill really fast by pressing hard on the rotary handle while operating. They think they are drilling faster, when it really isn't because when they put too much pressure on the drill, the machine speed is reduced, and the metal removal rate also decreases at the same time. The slower the drill runs, the lower the metal removal rate. Listen to the engine, and let the machine and drill do its thing.

9. Incorrect drilling of stainless steel.

If drilling stainless steel, there are three things to do:

A vacuum base pad needs to be used or a magnetic piece of metal must be attached to the surface to attach the magnetic base.

The drill bit needs to be suitable for the material hardness. This can be a good application to use alloy drill bits.

When drilling, make sure the feed rate is consistent and consistent because stainless steel will harden very quickly if you don't continue to cut regularly.

10. Take out the steel core after cutting is complete.

Drills with active core ejection can do this automatically. But not reliable. The cutting action generates heat, which leads to the expansion of the steel core causing it to jam into the drill bit. Ejecting the core can be time-consuming, and you run the risk of breaking the drill bits while trying to eject the core. Do this with caution.

11. Do not remove the steel core after cutting is complete.

The process of drilling many holes continuously is very easy to happen this case. When the steel core expands and gets stuck in the drill bit, the automatic steel core ejection system is disabled, the user does not try to remove the core, but continues to drill a new bit. As a result, the drill bit will be broken.
